GlassOps Expands with Standalone 4D Database Integration
GlassOps has reached another exciting stage in its development with the creation of SmartOps, a standalone implementation of the GlassOps platform built around the powerful 4D database environment.
This development demonstrates how GlassOps can operate across different database technologies while retaining its core field service management functionality, modern web interface and native mobile applications.
Bringing GlassOps to the 4D Platform
Originally developed using ASP.NET Core, SQL Server and .NET MAUI, GlassOps provides a comprehensive solution for managing field service operations, including job scheduling, surveys, appointments, customer communication, photographs, videos and digital reporting.
The new SmartOps implementation introduces 4D as the central database and application server, replacing the original SQL Server backend with a native 4D data model and REST API.
Importantly, this is more than simply connecting to an existing database. The system has been re-engineered to support 4D's database architecture, business logic and HTTP services while preserving much of the functionality of the original GlassOps platform.
Native Android and iOS Integration
One of the most significant achievements is the integration of the GlassOps mobile surveying application directly with the 4D database server.
Developed using .NET MAUI, the mobile application supports Android and iOS from a shared codebase, allowing field operatives to access job information, complete surveys and capture essential information while working on site.
The 4D integration supports:
- Downloading assigned jobs and customer information.
- Completing digital surveys with configurable questions.
- Capturing photographs, videos, drawings and signatures.
- Uploading completed jobs and associated media.
- Working offline and synchronising information when connectivity is available.
- Managing vehicle, tool and health and safety inspections.
The mobile application communicates directly with the 4D server through a dedicated REST API, without requiring the ASP.NET web application to be running.
Android integration is the primary development and testing platform, with the shared .NET MAUI architecture providing the foundation for iOS compatibility.
Retaining the Modern ASP.NET Web Interface
A key design objective has been to retain the familiar GlassOps web interface rather than replace it with an entirely new application.
To achieve this, a dedicated ASP.NET Core integration layer communicates with the 4D database server, allowing the existing Razor-based interface to continue providing access to contracts, customers, diaries, bookings and operational information.
This creates a flexible architecture in which the web application, mobile applications and database server operate as separate components.
The approach also opens up possibilities for integrating GlassOps functionality into established 4D business systems without requiring organisations to abandon their existing technology investments.
AI-Assisted Development and Integration
Artificial intelligence has played an important role throughout the development of GlassOps, and the conversion to 4D represents another example of how AI-assisted software engineering can accelerate complex development tasks.
The project involves translating database structures, adapting application services, creating REST endpoints and maintaining compatibility with existing mobile applications.
The platform also retains its dynamic survey question system, allowing organisations to configure the information collected by field operatives without rebuilding the mobile application.
A New Direction for GlassOps
The standalone 4D implementation is currently undergoing development and integration testing, with further work planned to validate complete mobile-to-server workflows and prepare the architecture for integration into established 4D environments.
This milestone demonstrates the flexibility of GlassOps and its potential to support organisations operating with different database platforms and existing business systems.
With ASP.NET Core, SQL Server, 4D and cross-platform .NET MAUI technology, GlassOps continues to evolve into a flexible and adaptable field service management solution.
The goal remains the same: to simplify field operations, improve communication and provide powerful digital tools for businesses and their mobile workforce.
